Description:

This position will focus on overcoming any number of technical issues, both customer/client or company related, as it pertains to the paint and coatings industry. The successful candidate will also be expected to travel internationally and work alongside current and potential customers in their respective laboratories.

Job Duties:

  • Work with the technical team to devise answers to a wide variety of paint and coatings problems
  • Evaluation of various formulations and application procedures to identify issues and implement solutions through the use of existing/new Lorama products
  • Ability to compile data and make the necessary recommendations required to move the project forward
  • Write accurate and precise technical reports
  • Interface with Sales representatives and customers
  • Provide feedback regarding market needs, trends and changes in technology
  • Deliver technical presentations to current and potential customers/clientele

Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirement of University or Technical degree in a science related field
  • Minimum 1 to 3 years’ experience formulating paints and coatings
  • Required to travel a minimum of 10 weeks per year
  • Strong grasp of the English language both verbal and written – Ability to speak multiple languages would be a strong asset
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, equipment and procedures within a laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of basic computer software (Word, Excel, Power Point etc.)

Research Chemist – Bio-Based Material

Description:

We are looking for a chemist specializing in bio-based or renewable materials to join our expanding research and development team. The main responsibilities for this position focusing on researching novel coatings technologies, and the development of innovative products for the coating industry. This role will be expected to lead various R&D projects and provide the necessary feedback to keep the projects on schedule. Knowledge focusing on polysaccharides, the techniques/chemistries used to manipulate/functionalize polysaccharides and a working knowledge of introducing the biomaterial into new and novel systems is highly desirable and expected. A working knowledge of fatty acids, oils and waxes would be a strong asset. Familiarity with analytical methods including GCMS, HPLC, IR and UV-Vis analysis is desirable. Knowledge of polymers is advantageous. The work environment is multi-disciplinary and the ability to work in a range of diverse projects is expected. Some travel may be required but is not mandatory.

Reports To: Research and Development Group Leader

Essential Job functions:

  • Development of novel products focusing on bio-based materials (polysaccharides, fatty acids and oils, etc.)
  • Perform a wide range of reactions focusing on developing a strong understanding of the chemistry required to functionalize bio-based/renewable materials and utilize them for industrial applications.
  • Develop the understanding of how to take a reaction from a laboratory setting to small scale production
  • Solve synthetic problems, develop, design and implement new synthetic routes
  • Recommend and develop new industrial projects
  • Write proposals, interim reports and final reports as appropriate
  • Evaluation of industry formulations and test methods
  • Interpret data and results
  • Supervision of technicians for relevant experiments
  • Interface with QC, Sales and other laboratory Groups
  • Keep up to date with industry and chemistry advances related to field of work

Qualifications:

    • Minimum requirement of an M.Sc. focusing in bio-polymer/biomaterial chemistry is preferred.
    • 2-5 years of industry experience in coating and paint industry preferred
    • Ability to analyze and interpret scientific data and make decisions with minimal supervision
